In many places throughout the world mercury thermometers are being phased out of use because mercury is highly toxic. When the sealed tube of a thermometer breaks, the mercury inside can come into contact with humans and the environment including our drinking water.
Today, thermometers come in all shapes and sizes depending on the purpose for which they are being used. For example, we use digital thermometers to take temperature.
