Scattering of Solar Radiation

A beam of solar radiation passes through a relatively transparent medium, such as air.
Some of the wavelengths are deflected from the direct beam by molecules of atmospheric gases, fine dust and smoke.
As a result, the amount of radiation reaching the land-water system is less than that received at the outer limits of the atmosphere.
