Temperature and Soil

  • In order for soil to obtain the requisite organic matter, decomposition must happen.
  • Decomposition is the process of decay, or rotting of an organism.
  • The temperature must be at least above freezing for bacteria and fungi to properly decay the organism to turn it into organic matter for the soil.
  • When temperatures are not above freezing, this process is virtually impossible.
