Thunderstorms in Florida

U.S. Thunderstorm Map

In Florida, there are roughly 100 thunderstorm days each year, more than anywhere else in the United States. Dealing with thunderstorms is part of the way of life in the Sunshine State. Most of the thunderstorms occur during the summer months, but they can happen in any season. Florida experiences so many thunderstorms because:

  • Moisture is provided by two bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
  • Plenty of sunshine warms the land and the air.
  • Sea breezes provide the lift (motion that causes air to rise) for clouds to form.
