Florida Wildfires

Florida Wildfire

A wildfire is described as an uncontrollable fire in a forested area. Florida has the second highest number of wildfires in the United States, and in a typical year Florida will see over 4,600 fires burn nearly 110,000 acres of land. Wildfires can start at any time of the year in the state, but the peak of the wildfire season is between January and June.

These fires can start naturally due to lightning strikes, volcanic eruptions and sparks created by a rock fall. However, these fires can also be caused by human activities, more commonly called “quasi-natural hazards.”
