Florida ranks highest in Lightning related injuries and deaths, more than all other states combined. It is known as the lightning capital of the United States with most fatal strikes occurring between May and September.
The most dangerous lightning strike area in Florida runs from St. Augustine (north) to Lake Okeechobee (south) and from east to west coasts. This puts Tampa Bay directly in the middle of the danger zone.
If you can hear thunder, you are within 10 miles of a storm and can be struck by lightning. Seek Shelter Immediately! Don’t resume outdoor activities until 30 minutes have past beyond the last clap of thunder. The threat of a lightning strike continues even if you see sunshine and blue skies!
