Weather and Migration

View Transcript

This map shows an example of an ideal weather situation for fall migration. The cold front has passed through leaving a low pressure center followed by a high circulation center across the United States. In between these areas of circulation the air is moving southward, providing a perfect “tail-wind” for migrating birds traveling through the middle of the country.

What Do You Think?

Now it’s your turn. Use the internet to research current weather patterns across the United States today. Do you think today’s weather conditions would be good or bad for migrating animals? Explain, using evidence from your research. Make sure to include the direction of migration and the reason for your decision. Find a partner and discuss your answer.
