The length of the day has an impact on the production of chlorophyll in a plant. Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and helps turn water and carbon dioxide into food through photosynthesis. As the nights become longer, the plant is not exposed to less sunlight, so the production of chlorophyll in the plant begins to slow. This allows for the other pigments in the leaves to become more visible.
