Pressure Gradient Force

Atmospheric pressure by itself is not a force. However, the difference between atmospheric pressures of different air masses does create a force. This pressure gradient force (pgf) is the rate of change of pressure over a given distance. The force acts from areas of high pressure to low pressure. If no other forces act upon an air parcel, it would move toward the lower pressure.
