Modeling the Greenhouse Effect

Investigate the following question:

How does the Greenhouse Effect help to determine the temperature on Earth?

  • 2 plastic soda bottles (large enough for thermometers)
  • 2 thermometers
  • Clear food wrap
  • Rubber band
  • Tape
  • Scissors or blade
  • Soil (not shown)

  1. Cut the tops off of the bottles so you have a large, round opening.
  2. Add 2 cm of soil to the bottom of each bottle.
  3. Place the thermometers inside the bottles. You may want to tape them to the sides, facing out so you will easily be able to read them later.
  4. Record the temperature in each bottle.
  5. Cover one bottle with the clear food wrap and use the rubber band to secure it.
  6. Place both bottles in the sun.
  7. Take the temperature every minute for 15 minutes and record in a data table you have created.
  8. While you wait, take a picture of your bottles to upload with your assignment.
