Some of the impacts of La Niña are:

  • During the winter and spring months, storm systems tend to be weaker and stay further to the north due to the shifts in the Polar and Pacific jet streams that steer the storm systems.
  • Less rainfall in the winter across the southern tier of the United States increases the threat of droughts. The decreased rainfall also leads to warmer temperatures.
  • Colder than normal temperatures are observed in Alaska and western Canada, although the colder air can occasionally make it into the West and Great Plains.
  • During the summer, there is increased hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean.
