Waves are generated by winds and occur in oceans, lakes and intracoastal waterways. They can grow rapidly if conditions are windy. Strong wind gusts can create rough seas, with waves as high as 12 feet in a matter of moments. At 13 mph, the wind can create 1-4 ft. waves. Wind speeds faster than 18 mph can cause waves over 4 ft., which can knock down swimmers and swamp or even capsize boats.
Thunderstorms are violent, short-lived weather phenomena that can include lightning, heavy rains, hail and strong winds. The strong winds can lead to rough seas. In addition to the potential of striking objects and people on land, lightning can also strike boats, the water, and swimmers in the water.
Waterspouts are tornadoes over water. They can be violent and move very fast, but they are typically slow moving and less intense. They are very common along Florida’s coastline, especially from May to October, but can be seen throughout the year. All waterspouts are a threat to those on or near the water. They can knock over boats while over the water and cause flying debris that can injure people if they move over land.
