Flight Route Planning - Winds

A good understanding of wind patterns can help with the planning of a flight route. A pilot can take advantage of tailwinds and avoid headwinds and crosswinds to get from one place to another.

  • Tailwind: A wind that blows in the direction of movement of an object.
  • Headwind: A wind that blows in the opposite direction of the movement of an object.
  • Crosswinds: A wind that blows across an object’s direction of travel.
