Tennessee’s Precipitation Record

The official 24-hour rainfall record for the state of Tennessee is 13.60 inches observed at the Milan Experimental Station in Gibson County, TN on September 13, 1982, was a result of the remains of Tropical Storm Chris.

Tropical Storm Chris made landfall near Port Arthur, Texas on September 12th and quickly moved inland before weakening over Arkansas. Despite the storm being downgraded, moisture from the Gulf of Mexico pushed into Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Locally heavy rain in portions of western Tennessee led to flooding along U.S Route 70 and 79.
