Precipitation

The frequency and timing of local rainfall are critical to the growth stages of the grape. Precipitation during early stages of development is beneficial but can have devastating effects during flowering. Above average rain increases the risk of fungal diseases.

Rainfall is also crucial to the water balance or budget. The water budget defines the water needs of a plant. Adequate soil-moisture can drive vine growth and also reduce the impacts of heat stress on the plant. Too much rainfall can lead to the inadequate ripening of the grape.
