Florida's Capital City - Tallahassee

Tallahassee became the capital of Florida in 1824, when Florida was still considered the Florida Territory until the land was ratified as a state in 1845. Located in Leon County, the city is about 98 square miles in size and is the 7th largest city in Florida. The city is home to Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and Tallahassee Community College and has been awarded the ‘All-American City’ Award twice (1999 and 2015).

Settled within the Florida Panhandle, Tallahassee has a Climate Humid Continental Climate Classification, which means:

  • The average temperature of the coldest month must be below 26 °F and there must be at least four months whose mean temperatures are at or above 50 °F.
  • The location must not be considered semi-arid or arid, and rainfall is well distributed throughout the year.
  • This climate classification is found within the northeast portions of North America, Europe and Asia from about 30°N to 60°N.
