Exploratory Walk (Optional Extension)

  1. Where is your WeatherSTEM Unit? Is it in a sunny area or a shady area? How might that affect the readings of solar energy or temperature?
  2. Are areas in the sun warmer or cooler than areas in the shade?
  3. Are there clouds in the atmosphere today? Do you think they are absorbing some of the Sun’s energy? If so, how might that be affecting the temperature where you are standing?
  4. Look at the plants around your campus. Which plants seem larger and more green: plants in sunny areas or plants in shady areas? Why might this be so?

When you come back inside, discuss your observations with a partner. What did you both find interesting about what you saw outside?
