What is Electricity and How Does It Flow?

  • One type of energy is electrical energy. This energy comes from moving particles called electrons.
  • An electrical circuit is a loop that carries current from one place to another and back.
  • Circuits must have a power source, like a battery or a solar PV cell.

You already know that the sun provides light energy. We can convert this light energy into another type of energy called electricity. Electricity is flowing charges. In order for the charges flow or move, they must have a completely loop or circuit to travel around. The circuit must have a power source that starts the charges flowing. Here is an example of a simple circuit that you may see in something like a flashlight. The bulb, wires and battery form a complete circuit so electricity can flow.
