Effects on the Ecosystem

Mammals, turtles and birds are exposed to oil at the surface. This map shows the locations of sea turtles and dolphins that were found dead in and around the spill area in 2010, however, it is difficult for scientists to determine if the spill was the cause of death. The oil spill introduces another factor in an already complex ecosystem dynamic.

Other small organisms that live near the surface can be harmed by the oil and dispersants including zooplankton, phytoplankton and small fish.
