Extreme Temperatures

The coldest permanently inhabited places in the world are all located in Siberia which itself makes up 77% of Russia. The towns of Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk have average temperatures during the winter below -50° Fahrenheit or -10° Celsius. While the city of Yakutsk has an average January temperature of -40° Fahrenheit or 4.44° Celsius.

The coldest naturally occurring temperature ever recorded is -89.2° Celsius (-128.5° Fahrenheit) at the Russian Vostok station in Antarctica.

The highest recorded average temperature was recorded in Dallol, Ethiopia. Now described as an abandoned ghost town, an average temperature of 96° Fahrenheit or 35° Celsius was recorded between 1960 and 1966. Dallol is so remote no roads go to it and the only way to get there is by camel caravan!

The hottest naturally occurring recorded temperature is 134° Fahrenheit which occurred in Death Valley, California in 1913. The previously thought record high temperature of 136° Fahrenheit from a 1922 reading in El Azizia, Libya has been officially retracted after extensive research into the documentation by a coalition of meteorology professionals from the World Meteorological Organization.
