Keeping an Eye on the Moon

Question:

When can we see the moon during the day from our school?

Materials:

  • Moon tracking chart
  • Crayons
  • Student eyeballs

Procedure:

Each day at around the same time, look up in the sky. If you see the moon, draw it on your moon tracking chart. Try to make your drawing the same as what you saw. So, if you see half of the moon, draw half. If the moon looks white, color it white, and so on. If you do NOT see the moon, put an X in the box for that day.

Observations:

Use the example chart below as a guide for how to track your observations. When the whole chart is filled out, talk about it together. Which days did you see the moon? What did it look like? Do you see a pattern?
