An El Niño (La Niña) event is categorized by the sea surface temperature anomalies are above (below) 0.5°C for three consecutive months, with the typical development of these events in the fall/winter months.

On average, an El Niño event occurs every 2-7 years. La Niñas typically occur right after El Niño events, but that isn’t always the case.
