Rather than just measuring rainfall or atmospheric humidity, the leaf wetness sensor gives a more accurate reading of how much moisture is coming in contact with plants, or more specifically, the leaves and aboveground portions of plants.
When combined with air temperature data, leaf wetness information is used to monitor the potential for fungus or diseases to develop on a plant.
