By measuring the soil moisture, it can be determined when and how much to water plantings to maximize irrigation efficiency. Too much or not enough water can have adverse effects on a plant.
The soil moisture probe uses electrical resistance to measure the moisture level in the soil. The sensor measures the soil tension, which is how tightly water clings to soil and measured in centibars, which is a unit of pressure.
