Hurricanes, tropical storms, and their remains can cause problems within the state; even if the center of a tropical storm or hurricane does not directly hit the state, the indirect effects can still have significant impacts. The heavy rain and strong winds can extend over 100 miles from the eye of the storm, and even the remains of a tropical system can still cause damage.

One of the most destructive hurricanes to impact Virginia was Hurricane Isabel in 2003. It was the worst hurricane to hit the Chesapeake Bay region since 1933. In Virginia, Isabel caused 8 foot storm surges along the coastline, up to 20 inches of rain in localized areas and nearly $2 Billion in damages.
