Inland Winds

Hurricane Irma was a massive storm. Hurricane force winds, wind speeds of at least 64 knots or 74 mph, extended out 50 miles from the center of the storm and the sustained wind speeds of tropical storm force winds, 34 knots or 39 mph, extended out nearly 200 miles from the eye. Even though the center of Hurricane Irma tracked over southwestern Florida, wind gusts over 100 mph were observed in Miami, FL. Tropical storm force winds were observed in portions of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee well in advance of the center of the storm.

This graphic from the National Hurricane Center shows the areas affected by sustained winds of tropical storm force (in orange) and hurricane force (in red).
