Winter Weather

The polar jet stream will bring storm systems over the region during the winter, causing West Virginia to experience a plethora of winter storms and wintry precipitation events. While most areas of the state report an average seasonal snowfall of more than a foot, heavy winter snows usually are confined to the mountainous regions of the state. As remarkable as it may seem, some of the heaviest snowfalls in the eastern United States occur in the Appalachians of West Virginia, with more than 100 inches fall annually in this area.

The snowiest month for the state is February 2010, when a record total of 158.2 inches of snowfall was observed at Bayard, WV (Grant County).

Regardless of location, sub-zero temperatures are possible throughout the state during the winter months.
