Cleaning Up the Oil

  • Since oil and water do not mix, most of the oil floats on top of the water. Long oil booms were used to try to collect the oil or block it from spreading.
  • During the Gulf Oil Spill, over 2,500 miles of booms were used. That’s long enough to stretch across the United States from California to Florida!
  • Sadly, many of the booms did not help and lots of oil was able to escape.
