The wind is the horizontal motion of air past a given point and is a direct result of pressure differences across a geographic location.

The wind is measured in two ways:

  1. The direction it is coming from, which is measured by wind vanes and referred to as either a:
    • Direction (North, East, South, West)
    • Degrees (0˚, 90˚, 180˚, 270˚)
  2. The speed at which it travels, which is measured by anemometers and is expressed in units of either:
    • miles per hour (mph)
    • knots (kts)
    • meters per second (m/s) - The Beaufort Wind Scale is typically used by mariners to estimate wind speeds over the open ocean.
