Hurricane Florence: Inland Winds

Hurricane Florence had a large wind field with hurricane force winds, sustained wind speeds of at least 64 knots or 74 mph, extended out 50 miles from the center of the storm and the sustained wind speeds of tropical storm force winds, 34 knots or 39 mph, extending out nearly 200 miles from the eye.

Wind gusts over 100 mph were observed in Wilmington, NC. The center of Hurricane Florence tracked over North Carolina and South Carolina, and because of the slow movement of the storm over land, the storm weakened.

This graphic from the National Hurricane Center shows the areas affected by sustained winds of tropical storm force (in orange) and hurricane force (in red).
