If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
The 30-30 Rule:
- 30 seconds - if the time it takes to count between seeing lightning and hearing thunder is less than 30 seconds, lightning is a potential threat and you should seek shelter immediately.
- 30 minutes - wait 30 minutes after hearing the last thunder before leaving your shelter. This is a good indication that the storm has moved away enough so the threat of lightning has decreased.
