- Pay attention to any beach warning system that is in place, such as flags.
- Swim at beaches patrolled by lifeguards.
- If you find yourself caught in a rip current:
- don’t panic and don’t fight the current
- swim parallel to the beach and once you’re out of the current swim at an angle away from the current and toward the shore.
- if you are unable to swim out of the current, float or tread water and call for help
