Hurricanes

Due to Georgia’s small coastline, the state rarely receives a direct hit by a hurricane. The last hurricane that made a direct landfall from the Atlantic was on September 5th 1979, when Hurricane David (a weak Category 1) made landfall near Savannah, GA.

Even if the center of a tropical storm or hurricane does not directly hit Georgia, the indirect impacts can still have significant effects across the state. The heavy rain and strong winds can extend over 100 miles from the eye of the storm, and even the remains of a tropical system can still cause damage.
