Review: Albedo, Volcanoes, and Climate

Albedo Diagram

Source: Wikipedia

Recall that the albedo of any surface determines how much solar energy is reflected or absorbed. Volcanoes emit sulfur gas into the atmosphere. When it combines with water vapor, it can become sulfuric acid, which increases the atmosphere’s albedo, increasing reflection of solar energy. This causes the amount of energy the atmosphere absorbs to decrease, cooling the planet.
