WeatherSTEM Fusion: Precipitation and Soil Moisture

The soil moisture probe installed by WeatherSTEM uses electrical resistance to measure the moisture level in the soil. The sensor measures the soil tension, which is how tightly water clings to the soil and measured in centibars (cb). The more resistance, or the higher the values goes, indicates how hard a plant’s roots have to work harder to get the moisture out of the soil.

Use the data from the WeatherSTEM sensors located on the campus of the University of Georgia in Tifton and explore the relationship between precipitation and soil moisture.
