Maize (the Spanish word for corn) was first domesticated in Mexico about 10,000 years ago. However, through trade routes and explorers, it was introduced to other countries and can be grown in diverse climates. Corn is one of the most adaptable species of the grass family and has evolved through cultivation with almost 300 races of corn in the Western Hemisphere.
