Hurricane Ian: Wind Field

This graphic from the National Hurricane Center shows the areas affected by sustained winds of tropical storm force (in orange) and hurricane force (in red).

The wind field associated with Hurricane Ian was large, and hurricane-force winds (sustained wind speeds of at least 64 knots or 74 mph) extended 75 miles from the storm's center. The sustained wind speeds of tropical-storm-force winds(34 knots or 39 mph) extend nearly 275 miles from the eye.

Wind gusts over 100 mph were measured along the southwest Florida coast, while hurricane-force wind gusts were measured well-inland, in central Florida, as the storm moved to the northeast. Sustained tropical storm-strength winds, with higher gusts, were observed in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
