US Weather Bureau

• The US Army Signal Corps became the United States Weather Bureau, which was housed under the War Department.
• Using telegrams and reports, weather observations made by trained soldiers were taken at forts throughout the U.S. and sent to the office of the Chief Signal Officer in Washington DC.
• Once received, the data were turned into tables, reports, and maps like this one.
