The Department of Agriculture
- In 1891, President Benjamin Harrison passed an act transferring the responsibility of taking meteorological observations from the War Department to the Department of Agriculture.
- Today’s National Weather Service traces its origins back to the observations done by U.S. Army Signal Corps.
- Even after the Dept. of Agriculture took over, the Corps still retained the responsibility for military meteorology.
