Direct vs. Indirect Measurements
Like many fields of study, meteorology depends on a series of measurements in order to make observations. There are two ways to measure weather:
- Direct - also known as “situ” (in place), these measurements are taken when the instrument comes in direct contact with the variable being measured.
- Indirect - also known as “remote sensing,” are observations made without the instrument coming in contact with the variable being measured.
