What Does Radar Show?

Radar can track weather conditions up to 140 miles away! Radar devices collect several types of data:

  • Base Reflectivity: the energy reflected back to the radar, this is used to monitor rain and severe weather
  • Storm Total Precipitation: an estimate of heavy rains and/or total rainfall given within a set period.
  • Velocity: motion of weather either toward or away from the radar device. Allows detection of straight line winds and damaging rotations associated with storms and tornadoes.
