Most people come to Florida during the winter to escape the cold weather, but not all of the state is able to escape the icy grasp of winter. If an intense low pressure system is followed by a very strong high pressure, cold Canadian (or even Arctic air) can invade the state. When this happens, below freezing temperatures and cold wind chills can be reported as far south as Lake Okeechobee.
Contrary to popular belief, it can actually snow in Florida! The first documented snow in the state was reported in 1744 and since then there have been over 80 separate snow events within the state. Snow flurries have been reported as far south as Homestead, FL in January 1977 and Jacksonville, FL had its first ever White Christmas back in 1989.
On March 6, 1954, the snowfall total of 4.00" in Milton, FL became the 24-hour state record.
