As Hurricane Ida tracked across Louisiana and the Southeast United States, it knocked out power to millions of customers. Images from the Suomi NPP (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/NPP/mission_overview/index.html) satellite show the differences in the natural view of the lights at night in New Orleans before (left) and after (right) Hurricane Ida.
Ida knocked out most power transmission lines into New Orleans and the surrounding area. Temperatures in the region behind Ida rose into the upper 80s to lower 90s and, when combined with the humidity, caused heat index values to be well over 100°F. The conditions led to millions without the means to cool their homes and recover from the intense heat, leading to numerous accounts of heat-related illnesses and at least a dozen deaths.
