The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season officially ended on Nov. 30, and despite the slow start, the season produced 15 named storms, including eight hurricanes. Hurricanes Florence and Michael, the two major” (Category 3, 4 or 5) hurricanes, caused significant damage in the southeastern U.S. during September and October. The 2018 hurricane season was also the first since 2008 to have four named storms active at the same time (Florence, Helene, Isaac, and Joyce).
Watch this video produced by NOAA of the 2018 hurricane season, as seen by the GOES East satellite. For the first time, the entire Atlantic basin was observed from space and allowed meteorologists to monitor storms as they form off the coast of Africa and then enter the Atlantic.
